Retinol: The Long-Game Ingredient
Retinol belongs to the retinoid family — derivatives of vitamin A that interact with receptors in skin cells to influence how those cells behave. Over-the-counter retinol is converted by the skin into retinoic acid, its active form, which then communicates with skin cells to speed up their turnover cycle.
The result, with consistent use over weeks to months, is skin that sheds older surface cells more regularly, which can improve the look of fine lines, rough texture, and post-inflammatory dark spots.
